Building a Homemade Weather Radar with a HackRF or PlutoSDR and a Salvaged RV Satellite Dish 08-18Targeting the gap left by NEXRAD's 4–6 minute data latency and 100+ mile radar station distances, the project repurposes a Winegard Carryout Anser GM-5000 RV automatic satellite dome (whose LNB radiates at 10.4 GHz — an ideal wavelength for weather radar), pairs it with either a HackRF (half-duplex, pulsed timing) or a PlutoSDR (full-duplex, continuous FMCW chirp), and uses open-source Python software to produce a live color-scaled reflectivity radar display. The post also addresses FCC licensing concerns around amateur-radio automatic beacons and experimental use of the 3 cm (10.0–10.5 GHz) amateur band.

9GRadio: An Android RTL-SDR App for Spectrum Monitoring and Decoding Analog/HAM/Aviation/Marine Radio Traffic 08-189GRadio is an open-source Android app for RTL-SDR dongles, released by Richard (9G5AR), focused on spectrum monitoring and multi-mode radio decoding. It supports AM, FM, NFM, WFM (including stereo), USB, LSB, CW, CWR, DSB, and raw IQ demodulation. On the digital side it covers APRS plus digital voice protocols (DMR, D-Star, YSF, DPMR, NXDN) and aircraft/marine/datalink modes (ADS-B, AIS, ACARS, RDS, multilateration). A standout feature is its built-in multilateration stack for transmitter geolocation — only two networked 9GRadio receivers are required, and the stack is advertised as protocol-agnostic, so any mode carrying a digital identity (AIS, ACARS, RDS, digital voice, etc.) can be localised. The APK and source are available on GitHub Releases; the app is not on Google Play.

Passive 5G Handset AoA Estimation via USRP B210 Using Uplink SRS 08-18A new arxiv paper (2608.00080) proposes a passive, network-side angle-of-arrival (AoA) framework running on an srsRAN gNB. It harvests the native Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) transmitted by off-the-shelf 5G handsets, captures per-antenna SRS channel estimates with a calibrated two-element USRP B210 receiver, and feeds them into a MUSIC-based estimator. No protocol changes or UE cooperation are required, and up to four handsets can be localized simultaneously. Indoor measurements on n40/n78 across a 30° broadside sector achieve ~1.5° RMS error; outdoor tests in a live 5G SA deployment confirm multi-user passive localization. Accuracy is governed mainly by propagation and SINR rather than distance.

Yttek Unveils plusDR SDR Platform: 10 MHz to 15 GHz Coverage for 6G and mmWave Testing 08-18Yttek has launched the plusDR, a software-defined radio (SDR) platform aimed at accelerating the development, testing, and verification of next-generation wireless communication systems. Covering 10 MHz to 15 GHz with up to 400 MHz instantaneous bandwidth, it targets applications from 6G FR3 and Ku-band satcom to advanced wireless research. The platform can serve as both a flexible development platform and a standalone SDR, integrating seamlessly with Yttek's mmWave front-end modules for beamforming and over-the-air testing.
